NewCHOIR RETURNS WITH A SWING!
WE ARE NOW RECRUITING SEE NOTICES PAGE FOR DETAILS
The November Workshop. After drawing breath during the summer, Oxford’s newChoir returned with a swing at their November workshop. Over 40 people spent nearly five hours having fun working on an unusual selection of ‘swing’ and traditional choral music, which ranged from Bob Chilcott’s A Little Jazz Mass (a jazzy concert version of the Missa Brevis) to the American composer James Bassi’s Harpsonnets (contemporary settings of Shakespeare sonnets in an Elizabethan mood).
In between came Bob Chilcott’s wonderful arrangement of the lyrical Irish Blessing and material drawn from OUP’s Spirituals for Choirs, which is described by the publisher as ‘A splendid collection for adventurous choirs prepared to let their hair down and forget traditional British reserve’.
There was something for everyone here and, under Janet Lincé’s leadership, all enjoyed some rewarding work plus varied rhythms and styles. Janet loves the unusual and now we know why, because she has the presence and personality to take singers with her, so no matter what the challenge, people come out of the musical tumble dryer better for it and with a smile on their face.
newChoir in the Round. So what is newChoir all about? Well the choir bridges the gap between the large ones that focus on well-known ‘Top Ten’ works and the few small ones that occupy the high end of the choral tradition. We limit the choir to around 40 and aim to broaden members’ horizons by tackling a wide repertoire of music from different traditions. We have given several well-received concerts at prestigious Oxford venues since our launch in January 2012, performing works that range from less well-known Bach to the contemporary Cecilia McDowall (including her Shipping Forecast).
Next Steps. We begin rehearsals for our next concert on Tuesday 7 January 2014 and are keen to recruit a few more confident singers who are prepared to work on the music between formal rehearsals, especially younger people. So if you want to join us have a look at the Notices Page and send your details to the membership secretary by clicking the Contact tab.
